Pranam to my
Guru Krsna.
Reading holy
books is not easy especially when we are starting out. Half or literally all of
that we read goes overhead, the same happened to me too. And the heaviness makes
one sleepy, but my Guru told me that I must read every day, even if at times it
is just a few pages or sometimes even 10 lines, but read I must.
Asking why
or arguing with one’s Guru is out of question and highly disrespectful. The
question was definitely there in my mind and I wanted an answer. One day I was
just going through the net and happened to read the following and found my
answer!
A Guru tells
his young disciple to read the Bhagwat Gita daily and the young disciple
asks
the Guru why should he be reading daily. The Guru does not reply and instead
gives the disciple a coal basket and tells him to go fetch water from the river
for him. The disciple goes to the river puts the coal basket in and comes back,
but as the coal basket is sieve like, all the water drains out. This happens
every day, however fast the disciple runs, by the time he reaches back all the
water has drained out! A dejected disciple goes and shows the coal basket to
his Guru and asks how will the water stay in it? When he needs to bring water
he should be given one in which the water will at least stay! Why did you give
me such a task, he asks. His Guru tells him to look at the coal basket closely,
when the disciple looks at it, he realizes that it is shining clean. The Guru
says, ‘Just as by trying to fill water every day the dirty coal basket has got
cleaned out! In the same way when you read daily it throws out the dirt from
one’s mind and gets cleaned for knowledge to seep in.’
When I read
this I mentally thanked my Guru for the simple and wonderful explanation he put
before me.
